Come Follow Me week 3

Come Follow Me for January 14th through 20 “We have come to worship him” is Luke 2 and Matthew 2.

I just want to say right here, I am loving this new curriculum!! I have also found that there are a lot of super talented members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints out there. I have been able to find for free, and for nominal prices lots of material to help in my own study and in teaching my grands. I am going to share with you what I am using and put the links to them for you because I love them and I think you might too. (I am not receiving any compensation for these links) I am utilizing quite a bit of stuff from the Red Headed Hostess. I have subscribed to her weekly scripture kits. They are great!! You can go look at them here. She also has some free downloads so be sure to look over her site carefully. I bought the wide margin New Testament download by Courtney Casper for only $5, and I am printing it as I go weekly. I also have been watching “Don’t Miss This” YouTube videos by Emily Belle Freeman and David Butler. And I have also been using their stuff from their website here.

Luke 2: (1 – 5) This is talking about when Mary & Joseph went to Bethlehem for the “taxing’  because of the decree of Caesar. I’m not sure if I forgot, or if I ever knew that this was not a true “taxing” as in had to pay taxes, but more of a census or registration that was being taken. Apparently this is something that Caesar like to do on a pretty regular basis.

One of the other things I learn from this is the once again reminder that even good people have and have to go through rough times. Just because I am good that doesn’t mean that my life is always going to be all ice cream and roses. And, truthfully, I wouldn’t really appreciate it as much if it was.

(6 – 20) this is the birth of Jesus, the angels visiting the shepherds, the shepherds visiting Jesus then making this known abroad and returning and glorifying God. I had not realized before about the “heavenly host” referred to in verse 13. I only understood there to be the one angel. It’s kind of cool to find out that the heavenly host was so excited that excitement could not be held behind the veil.

The weekly study guides from Red Headed Hostess noted something that I want to also bring out. Verses 19 & 33:

19 But Mary kept all these things, and a pondered them in her heart.

33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were
spoken of him.

Luke is recording eye-witness accounts from people other than himself, so these people told them his stories. I like that his parents told Luke that they pondered and marvelled at what went on.

Matthew 2: (1 – 12) These verses are about the wise men. I learned that we don’t really know how many wise men there were. The number 3 comes from the gifts.

Much has been written, beyond all possible warrant of scriptural authority, concerning the visit of the magi, or wise men, who thus sought and found the infant Christ. As a matter of fact, we are left without information as to their country, nation, or tribal relationship; we are not even told how many they were, though unauthenticated tradition has designated them as “the three wise men,” and has even given them names; whereas they are left unnamed in the scriptures, the only true record of them extant, and may have numbered two or many” (Elder James E. Talmage, Jesus the Christ)

(13 – 15) This is where Joseph is warned in a dream to take his family and flee into Egypt. I love this, this is just more witness to me that parents can receive personal guidance from the Spirit on how to keep our families safe.

And then again in verses 19 – 23 after Herod died, and angel appeared to Joseph in a dream again and told him is was safe to go to Israel and they went back to Nazareth.

Oh how Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us!! The plan of happiness shows this. Jesus condescension shows this. Now that I know and understand this how can I not love them and do my best to keep their commandments to show that I love them!! I believe that this new home centered, church supported curriculum was given to the leaders of the church from God. I believe that Jesus runs the church, actively. I believe that Jesus lives and loves each of us individually and I tell you these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
