The principle of Hope

Hope is the confident expectation of and longing for the promised blessings of righteousness. The scriptures often speak of hope as anticipation of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

The word hope is sometimes misunderstood. In our everyday language, the word often has a hint of uncertainty. For example, we may say that we hope for a change in the weather or a visit from a friend. In the language of the gospel, however, the word hope is sure, unwavering, and active. Prophets speak of having a “firm hope” (Alma 34:41) and a “lively hope” (1 Peter 1:3). The prophet Moroni taught, “Whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God” (Ether 12:4). from – hope and overview

Jacob 4:4-6

For, for this intent have we written these things, that they may know that we knew of Christ, and  we had hope of his glory many hundred years before his coming; and not only we ourselves had a hope of his glory, but also all the holy prophets which were before us.

Behold, they believed in Christ and worshiped the Father in his name, and also we worship the  Father in his nameAnd for this intent we keep the law of Moses, it pointing our souls to him; and  for this cause it is sanctified unto us for righteousness, even as it was accounted unto Abraham in  the wilderness to be obedient unto the commands of God in offering up his son Isaac, which is a  similitude of God and his Only Begotten Son.

Wherefore, we search the prophets, and we have many revelations and the spirit of prophecyand having all these witnesses we obtain hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea.

Jacob was an awesome prophet. He speaks plainly and with such conviction I always sit up taller and pay a lot of attention to his writings.

I learned as a young child that is the belief in things not seen. So that has has always been what I believed about hope. It wasn’t until I got clean and started working the steps of NA that I learned the world’s definition of hope. It’s ok if the world has a different definition I guess. I will go by the scriptural definition.

Here is a video about the principle of Hope as related to recovery from addiction, this is a wonderful video!

In a 1995 BYU address, “A More Excellent Hope” President Russell M. Nelson stated “Hope emanates from the Lord, and it transcends the bounds of this mortal sphere. Paul noted that “if in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” Only with an eternal perspective of God’s great plan of happiness can we ever find a more excellent hope. “What is it that ye shall hope for?” asked Mormon. He then answered his own question: “Behold say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ.”

Today I have that Hope. I know that Christ is! I know that he loves me. I know that I am His. I know that as I live my life for Him and obey then I have the Hope of eternal life with Heavenly Father. I leave things with you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
