Careful versus Casual is the talk given at the April 2019 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by Becky Craven, second counselor in the young women general presidency.
I liked this talk because it helps me look at myself and see where I am in my life and my conversion. Am I still doing all I can to increase my relationship with Heavenly Father and the Savior daily or have I backed off. I love talks that help me see where I need to improve me. I work diligently to only work on myself, not to worry about what anyone else is doing. So I like talks that give me assistance in working on me.
Sister Craven opens with a cute little story about happiness for $15. Then concluded for us “As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are blessed to know how and where true happiness is found. It is found in carefully living the gospel established by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and in striving to become more like Him.”
Next she talked of an engineer friend and a train wreck to bring us to this point. “. . . we . . . are on a track, a covenant path we committed to when we were baptized as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although we may encounter occasional obstacles along the way, this path will keep us moving toward our prized eternal destination if we stay firmly on it.”
She states: “There is a careful way and a casual way to do everything, including living the gospel. As we consider our commitment to the Savior, are we careful or casual? Because of our mortal nature, don’t we sometimes rationalize our behavior, at times referring to our actions as being in the gray, or mixing good with something that’s not so good? Anytime we say, “however,” “except,” or “but” when it applies to following the counsel of our prophet leaders or living the gospel carefully, we are in fact saying, “That counsel does not apply to me.” We can rationalize all we want, but the fact is, there is not a right way to do the wrong thing.”
I love that, “there is not a right way to do the wrong thing!!! Sometimes I need to be reminded of that. The “natural girl” part of me want to try to figure out how to rationalize getting what I want, “my Will” whether it is God’s will or not sometimes. This is such a good reminder for me.
Next Sister Craven gives us examples of how we can look at our lives to see is we are being “careful or casual” om many different areas of our lives. This is such a good talk to help me gauge where I am versus where I want to be.
I also really like he reminding me that I can’t (and don’t have to try to) be perfect. Too often that character weakness of perfectionism likes to pop up in my head and tell me that if it’s not perfect then I just might as well not do it. Whether it is a blog, a meal, my testimony at sacrament meeting, service, it could be anything. But she reminds me that perfection is not the point, worthiness is!!
“It’s impossible to live a perfect life. Only one man was able to live perfectly while dwelling on this telestial planet. That was Jesus Christ. Although we may not be perfect, brothers and sisters, we can be worthy: worthy to partake of the sacrament, worthy of temple blessings, and worthy to receive personal revelation.”
In this 6 months between general conferences I will read this talk many times and add some of her questions to my normal 10th step so that I can be careful, not casual in my personal life today!
Thank you Sister Craven for a talk to help me stay in a better place in my relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ!
I testify that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ live, I believe that they created us and that they love us dearly and individually! I believe that Jesus leads the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints through revelation on a daily basis. I believe that I can receive personal revelation for my life and the things and people that the Lord has given me responsibility. I believe the Book of Mormon to be scripture from the Lord. It is an amazing book and by reading it and living its precepts on a daily basis, my life is better. I believe that the Lord wants us to show our love for Him by following His commandments. I also believe that by following His commandments we find a truly wonderful life that nothing else will give us. I know this has manifested in my life. When I started trying to following the Lord’s will He began raining down blessings on me and He continues to do so today as I diligently try to live His commandments perfectly to the best of my ability! I leave these things with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
